Fishing market is changing so rapidly that there is only a few products which withstand the test of time. It is similar to fashion trends where new models, patterns, combinations and variations which the sooner arise, the faster sink into oblivion. The same situation is seen when we are talking about wobblers. Of course it have its charm but results in overfilled box and real headache when choosing the lures. There are sometimes lures which seems to be timeless. Lures from which we start to assemble our box for the next fishing trip. Classics which repeatedly have proven their effectiveness and left behind all the innovations and marketing inventions. Salmo Minnow is such bait without any doubts.

I am convicted that most of you asked to sketch the classical wobbler more or less accurately will reflect the appearance of Salmo Minnow. Salmo Minnow is one of the oldest brand-name model, which despite several years of improvements and minor corrections remains classical shape and fans of this type of bait are still discovering its new features and capabilities. A wide range of colour choices, four sizes, sinking and floating version and what is more, 7cm Minnow is available as deep diving version. In fact, using only this model you can fish in most of your fisheries and in record declarations coming to our company from all over the world it is hard to find species of freshwater predator which was not tempted by this classical wobbler.

Versatility

is probably the best word to describe the nature of this lure. Its effectiveness will be seen both in the river fisheries and lakes. It is designed as well for traditional spinning, as – what practice has shown – for slow and fast trolling. Using the Salmo Minnow does not enforce the use of special, sophisticated fishing equipment. As with most medium sized lures, optimal choice would be using of a fast action spinning rod, and for the biggest versions, good choice would be also medium power casting rod. The length and power of your rod depends on the type and characteristic of your fishery, but also on strength and size of fishes you aim for.

For 5-7cm versions it is recommended to use 0,18 – 0,22mm monofilament line with 3 – 4,5kg strength. If we are fishing in technically difficult fishery it is possible to replace monofilament with stronger braid. Just remember, that very thick lines may slightly dampen the action of the smallest versions of this lure, that is why it is not worth to exaggerate with their size. What is more, it is good to counterbalance the increased stiffness of your set with well adjusted drag or slightly slower action rod. It will allow to land safely every lightly hooked fish.

Although, reaching for the largest version of minnow, we must take into account having a real specimen bite. This is not time and place for finesse and delicate sets. 0,22 – 0,24mm thick and 4 -5kg strong monofilament line is an absolute minimum. We tie the line to the lure through small snap, or directly to the split ring attached to the eye of the lure. Using 9cm version it is worth to secure it with pike proof leader. It just so happens that this slender morsel, can attract this spotted robber in places wherever we do not expect it. If we find a fishery, rich in big, active predators, it is worth to rearm wobbler in slightly larger trebles – a larger number. It will not change the action of the lure, but increases the effectiveness of setting a hook and certainty of landing the biggest trophies.

Minnow lures basic parameters are presented in table:

Swift creek and forest streams

Not widely swinging action of this lure, combined with pretty high oscillation frequency make Minnow a classic trout lure since its beginning. What is more, it is effective all year round and the character of its action allows to fish properly in almost every possible way. During the winter, when the water temperature makes that typical river fishes are not willing to chase fleeing quickly morsels, wobbler fished upstream can make a great job. We should pay a greater attention to banks washed over by a stream, all troughs and corners with slow water. Minnow between 5 – 7cm should be retrieved very slowly with lots of pauses close to places where we expect to find the fish. These pauses may last over a dozen seconds and it is worth to diversify them with delicate pulls. It is enough when a lure wobbles lazily. Sluggish fishes need time to decide whether to attack or not. If you find a deep trough or a deeper hole, it is worth to reach for the deep diving version. This version of the lure will penetrate the bottom water layer and allows to reach the deeply hidden fishes on short distances. Long lip beyond bringing our lure to the desired depth, will be some kind of protection against loosing our bait, bouncing off the underwater obstacles and keeping the gripping hooks away. If we wish to let the lure under the fallen tree, we just need to reach for the sinking version. This is obviously a risky game, but it allows to save the honor of hunter on several occasions. What is more, such sacrifice often results in meeting with the largest trophies.

The warmer is, the more fishes we are looking for in the main stream areas. While fishing for trout we should change the direction of lure action and fish downstream and across the flow. Do not bypass any fallen trees, overhanging branches of trees or grasses. Even the smallest depression in the river bed may hide a predator ready to attack. While fishing downstream the range of moves and tricks which we can use is very wide. Simple casting and retrieving should be slightly faster than the river stream. To this method we can add variety of additional moves and jerks of a rod. Every additional moves of a rod tip will cause jumps or twinkles of a bait which can became an additional impulse for fish following the bait – it is often decisive for the attack.

Minnow allows for minor corrections of its work. In technically difficult areas, where access to the river bank is difficult the minimal correction of the front eye (to curve on the selected side) allows to set its work- during the rolling will slightly turn in chosen direction. Often it is the only chance to fish in a given place.

The Salmo Company offers a wide range of colours of their products but a greater attention should be paid to the imitations of natural coloration of fishes. Colours such as common minnow (M), brown trout (T), rainbow trout (RBT), dace (RD) have outwitted even the most careful fishes in the clearest streams of the world. However if we come across the water rise and its clarity is disturbed by carried sediments it is worth to remember about more aggressive colour choices such as HP, CYP or CMD.

At the end there is another important tip. It is widely known that large trout are not willing to share their hunting territory with smaller brothers. This should draw a conclusion about choosing optimal bait.

Big lowlands rivers

In such fishery we can meet almost every kind of a water predators. Much more frequently the best solution is using a deep diving Minnow 7cm and our achievement will be pike, zander, perch and asp. Large rivers always used to surprise. If these fishes can be found in the particular fishery we must be ready to meet the king of lowland waters – catfish. Minnow perfectly imitates the natural food – small fishes. So wherever we observe herds of fry there for sure predators may occur. Good fisheries will be all kinds of bank reinforcement, natural banks and coastal escarpment. Close to landslide small fishes are hanging around and waiting for easy and washed by a stream bites. In such places the occurrence of predators is only a matter of time. In such places it is worth waiting even until nightfall. Often just the turn of the day and night presents diversity of capabilities of our favourite fishery.

In the evening and shortly after dark small fishes occupy surface layer of a water, then the floating version of Minnow will be proverbial bull’s eye. Similar tactic should be used when hunting for an asp. Its surface attack on bleaks, daces and small chubs cannot remain indifferent for every river hunter. If we find such a spot, lets cast our 6-9cm Minnow and retrieve the line very fast with high lifted rod tip. Remember that an asp is extremely timid fish. Let us try to get close to fishery in such way that our presence will be as discreet as possible. Using high grass, shore scrub and subdued colours of clothes to have a good mask.

The last big river fishery where we can confirm effectiveness of this lure are all kinds of shoals, groups of boulders rubbles and overflows. Slowly retrieved the smallest versions of Salmo Minnow will entice every predator patrolling this shallow water, which is a textbook example for big chub, ide and asp fisheries. It is also worth to remember that such a shallow lunchroom with rapid water flow sometimes can be visited by zander and catfish. Lakes

While fishing on still waters we should focus on overgrown shoreline littoral zone. Water plants are all season feeding ground and shelter for fry and many smaller fish species. There is nothing strange that such spots are magnets for predators. During the spring and autumn time it is favourite hunting area for pikes and the biggest version of minnow should be our choice there. A big perch attack can be also a nice surprise. But if we find a herd of small perches we can use a smaller lure which will result in biggest amount of bites. We need to remember that the biggest predators like to hang around the main groups of smaller ones. What is more, they do not despise a menu made of their smaller brothers. Maybe it is worth to stay with the biggest version of this classical wobbler, choose perch colour (PH) and hunt for real specimen?

Do not forget about reeds. Escaping from reeds small fishes are an excellent target for waiting predators. In a very shallow bays or where the water plants almost reach the water level choose the floating version. If the depth exceeds 2,5 meters – use of the sinking version is the optimal choice. It can be fished in many different ways. From simple casting and retrieving to jerking. But it is not a secret that the most effective is the mixed method. In order to increases our chances of meeting with the fish we should diversify our fishing method and Minnow perfectly suits here. If we have doubts connected whether our work is correct, we should choose a shallow bay with clear water and take a moment to check how the lure will behave while fishing using different methods. This knowledge will result in during the appropriate hunting.

One of an applied by the anglers methods is to allow the wobbler to sail. This is an excellent imitation of an hurt fish behaviour. After casting a floating version of the wobbler, sunk it with a few reel turns and then let it freely come up to the surface. Next pull it few times and make another pause. This will give the impression that our artificial fish helplessly is trying to dive. This spreading on surface circles are especially tempting. We must not forget about controlling the tension of line because the attack may occur at any time. It is possible that this trick will be effective also on your fishery.

Trolling

Despite the fact that this classical lure was not designed for trolling, the practice has shown that its properties can be very effective in this fishing method. 7cm deep diving version of Minnow is a perfect lure for fishing spots located at depth of about 3,5 meters and the lure action is attractive for fishes both when trolling with low as with higher speed. Line length must be such, that the lure will reach the bottom from time to time. Such a cloud of stirred up bottom sediments can be very provocative. A long lip also helps to avoid snagging your lure into flooded tress, rocks and stumps, that is why it is not worth to elude flooded fields of stumps, rocks etc. This lure is perfect for artificial reservoirs where it is one of basic weapons for pike and perch and on other side of ocean – for walleye and bass. It also happens that the shoal of perches shepherd shoal of minor fishes into the open and deep water. If the sonar confirm location of trapped shoal at depth of 3,5 meters the 7 cm Salmo Minnow SDR will not disappoint you.

The traditional floating version are still waiting for discover and using them in trolling. Location of any leader at least 1,5 meters in front of the lure allows our lure to achieve any depth. If additionally we diversify retrieving the line with delicate held in hand rod tip movement, then…

Maybe I will not betray you all secrets. Fishing is also a passion for discovering.

As you can see Minnow is a very versatile lure. For decades, the wobblers with such classical shape enticed fishes all over the world and I am sure still it will be so. Therefore it is the safest choice – refined and tested/checked. The available range of sizes and colour choices makes that everyone should adopt to its favourite fishery. Minor nuances and Salmo’s secrets make this lure your favourite and basic fishing equipment.
